Agency Life: The Intern Perspective

iStock-652836920.jpgAs I walked into the building, I was nervous, anxious and honestly, terrified. Walking into the work room, I looked around at all the cubicles, employees vigorously mashing on their keyboards, running from cubicle to cubicle, and dashing in and out of meetings. The first thought that came into my head was, “Dear goodness, what have I gotten myself into? Are they sure they hired the right guy?”

The life of an agency associate appeared hectic and intimidating. I was not sure if I could keep up with all of these smart, forward-thinking individuals. But I realized something, I am here to learn from the best, and if I do not feel a little on edge, then something is wrong. Being uncomfortable leads to innovative ideas and new ways of learning. When you step outside of your comfort zone, you are able to come up with amazing new ideas.

The feeling of inadequacy soon dissipated. As my assignments were explained, and I met the individuals in my department, my head stopped spinning. Over the next few days, the method to the madness became clear. I understood the meetings in people’s cubicles and the rapid clacking of the keyboards. As ideas came to them, they discussed them right away, because that particular idea could lead to an even better one.

I do not view these behaviors as chaotic anymore, but creative ingenuity. Each team works together to create a unique product or campaign that they can look at and say, “there is my individual touch.” The quirky ways that these ideas bloom is truly a sight to behold. Watching the analytical and creative minds weave together is like a sophisticated dance. This, in my opinion, is what makes Intermark so great. Yes, there are separate departments, but there is no designated idea person. Anyone in the office could come up with the next great idea. This reminds me of a quote from Chef Gusteau in, Ratatouille, “Anyone can cook.” At Intermark, truly anyone can be the source of inspiration.
